Portugal. the Man: First Impressions of the Lomo'Instant Square

1

Lomography has been friends with Portugal. the Man for a long time. Whether it's a tour of the office headquarters in Vienna, partying late into the night afterwards, playing a show at the Lomography Gallery Store, or most recently popping by to chat in NYC about testing the Lomo'Instant Square, these guys are chock full of good vibes and love of photography. Bassist Zach Carothers shot with the Lomo'Instant Square and shared the photos as well as some insights into his rockstar life.

Seems like you've got a pretty cool job, tell us about it!

We don’t sleep much, but that’s just fine with me. I get to travel the world with my best friends. We just love experience. We’ve never been one of those bands to sit around in hotel rooms. We get out. We like to eat the eats, drink the drinks, see the towns and climb the mountains. I’m a lucky guy.

For how long have you been a band?

We’ve been together a little over ten years, but i grew up with most of these guys.

What inspires you and keeps your creative gears turning?

Everything we encounter on our travels. We have such a unique perspective because of our situation. Every movie we see, song we hear or person we meet somehow ends up in our music in some form or another. We always try to take time specifically for inspiration. Every time we go somewhere new for the first time we stay a day or two on either side of the show to explore and learn.

Do you have any advice for those wanting to get started as a musician?

Be prepared to sacrifice. We’ve lost girlfriends, dogs, apartments, college degrees and plenty of good paying jobs. You really have to dive in head first. Also have something to say. You can work harder than anyone else, but you have to be good ya know? Self awareness is the most important thing.

What advice would you give to your 15 year old self?

Play more piano and take more pictures.

What are your thoughts instant photography?

I love instant photography. I only shoot on film and i miss the instant gratification of digital so much. This is the best of both worlds.

What do you think of the Lomo’Instant Square? How can you see it fitting in with life on the road and on stage?

I’m in love with it. Compact, instant and fun. The energy in a space or a party steps up every time i pull out the camera. It brings people together.

How do you like the pictures taken with the Lomo'Instant Square?

I’m all about them. Classic framing that brings me back to my childhood. The glass is so much sharper and easier to control. Very excited to get into this more.

What do you like about the square format?

Symmetry. There is something so beautiful about right angles and equal sides.
