Pets on Film – Different Pet Photo Ideas

16

Along with self-portraits, there's a surge in pet photographs taken during the quarantine, too. If you're an aspiring portrait photographer, taking photos of your dearest, cutest pets is good practice. Playful to the point of uncooperative, fun yet unpredictable, they will do as they wish as you chase them with your camera, begging for just one photo. Pet photography will teach you patience, determination, and discipline, which, let's face it – in the world of analogue photography, are awesome and useful to have!

Here are some ideas because taking pictures of pets can be an art form, too. (Note: We're aware that there's a variety of pets out there but in this article, we're focusing on dogs and cats.)

Candid

"Another photo? You've GOT to be kidding me," @ddimon's cat seemed to say. You can't really tell a pet to hold a pose or make the same face, so you have to be quick with a point-and-shoot for candid photos like these. Unless, of course, you have mastered your manual camera and can easily snap a shot.

Classic

These are for moments when your pet is lazily lounging perhaps after a meal or is distracted by something. To keep them still, well, wait until they've had their tasty meal; otherwise, you need to have an assistant luring them with a treat as you fiddle with your camera. It will probably take a lot of practice but think of it this way – you'll also be able to train them to "sit" if they haven't learned that already.

Dreamy and Cinematic

Double exposures, LomoChrome films, natural light, colored lighting, and Bulb setting – the options are limitless. This is your time to shine, take a break from the goofy snapshots, and dare to be creative and experimental.

Funny

There's a thin line between candid and funny, the latter a lucky shot. For funny photos, anything goes! You have to be fast enough to capture them mid-meow, mid-howl, mid-song. A point-and-shoot will be most ideal for this, and dangling their favorite toy will elicit the most interesting reactions.
